How do I get my kittens to start learning their names?

Well, I need help training my cats and getting them to learns their names, if you know any tips, tricks or anything that will help me train my cats, please do tell :D Thanks!

How do I get my kittens to start learning their names?
1. Start when your cat is with you, in a contented mood, such as when curled up on your lap. Pet your cat in the way your cat most likes to be petted, and say his name a few times in a soft, friendly voice. Do this several times each day. After a while, you cat will associate the pleasure of being petted with his name.

2. Next, when stroking your cat, and saying his name, if he turns his head to look at you, give him a reward, such as a small cat treat or a scratch behind the hears. Praise your kitty.

3. Then, sometime when your cat is near you, not sleeping, say his name in the same tone of voice. When he looks at you, praise him. If he comes to you, give him a reward and praise. Practice this several times a day.

4. As your cat catches on, knowing that pleasurable things come when he hears his name, try saying it further away from him, eventually from another room. Reward your cat with a treat, stroking or a toy, and praise each time. (You’ll find what reward works best for your own cat.)

Tip: Never say your cat’s name in a forceful voice to stop him from doing something wrong–such as jumping up on the dining room table. Say “no!” instead (or use a spray from a water bottle) so he doesn’t associate his name with getting in trouble.
Reply:Repeat their name before every command, and greet them with it. My cat's name is Simmis, so when I first got her, I would say things like:

"Simmis, no!"

"Good girl, Simmis!"

"Hi, Simmis!"

"Who's my little girl? Simmis!"

She figured out that that was her name in less than a week. After you've got a cat used to its name, you should continue using it...you don't have to use it as often as you did when you were first teaching it to her, but you should still use it a couple of times a day. Some people like to associate their cat's name with good things by feeding them or giving them a treat if they come when called, but I was always afraid that my cat would associate her name with "food time." I've also read that names with an "ee" sound at the end (like Simmis, Rocky, Fluffy, etcetera,) are easier for a cat to remember.

What the previous user has said about "cats not being dogs" is true. My cat only "comes when she's called" if I use a sweet tone of voice and if she wants some attention. =P

If you're talking about litter training, that's usually very easy. Put the litter box somewhere where they can reach it, and place the kittens in the litter box several times a day, running their paws through the litter. Cats are naturally attracted to grainy, sandy textures, and 99% of the time, they'll figure out that that's where they go to the bathroom before the week is out.
Reply:I recently got kittens and had this same question too. I just try to say their names to them over and over again when I talk to them. I try to give them plenty of attention and call them by name when I'm playing with them. One of the kittens "Shadow" responds to his name most of the time but he will also respond to "here pretty kitty". Our other kitty "Isis" doesn't care what you have to say, she won't respond unless she wants something.
Reply:do they know the basics like using the litter pan? If they don't, make sure you put them by their pan everytime they eat. Or if they poop somewhere else other than the pan, put the poop in their pan and show if to them. They will know that's where they are supposed to use the bathroom at. To teach them their name, scoop one of them up and make eye contact. Say the name to them over and over for 5-10 minutes each day. They will know their name sooner or later.
Reply:Call them by name even if your not certain they understand because animals understand a lot better than most of us think.

Talk to them, discuss things with them.

It doesn't have to be a loooooooong lecture or anything like that just talk to them!

That is in fact the way human babies learn, most of the time people don't even have to explain what a word means! Because they usually figure out what it means themselves.

=•D

Good luck!
Reply:Just keep using their names when you're addressing them, or communicating with them in any way. It just takes time. Be patient. But remeber, they're not like dogs where they'll come running when you call their name--at least not most cats.
Reply:like all these other posts...keep repeating the cat's name when you talk to it...try to make eye contact as well...like people cats love to hear familiar sounds...like their name(s)...they will catch on eventually, never fear...especially at feeding time!
Reply:Call them by name and when they come give them a treat. Do this a few times a day and they'll eventually get the hang of it!
Reply:When they do come to you praise them with that name and when you feed them call them with their names, Just use their names as much as you want
Reply:Ah.. I would probably suggest you just keep calling them by there names.
Reply:just keep calling them by their names, they will learn them sooner or later.
Reply:Just CALL them! Darn it!
Reply:just keep saying there names over %26amp; over again..that's what my family did when we got my cat. ;)
